Comet does a 'Douglas Adams sun-dive'
By David Heath
Monday, 15 March 2010 00:40

Science - Space

It's interesting what you can see when you have somewhere new to stand and look.  The SOHO probe launched by NASA and ESA recently observed a train of comets crashing into the sun.

The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) is a joint NASA / ESA probe positioned in a stable orbit approximately 1.5M km away in a direct line towards the Sun.

From this perspective, an uninterrupted view of the sun is achieved - any Earth-orbit device will be 'eclipsed' at some point in its orbit.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Australian time, SOHO observed an amazing event – a comet performing a "sun dive," as Douglas Adams might describe it.

Closer inspection of the available images showed that in fact there was a train of at least 5 comet fragments – a vision very similar to that seen in July 1994 when Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided in 21 pieces with Jupiter.

Images clearly show a major solar flare or prominence erupting from the Sun soon after each impact.

Other sites discuss a number of aspects of the impact which may be of interest to readers.

Dinosaur Extinction Linked to Asteroid or Comet Impact Confirmed
by Michael Small | March 4, 2010 at 04:46 pm

An international panel of experts are in agreement that the extinction of the dinosaur species was due to an impact crater caused from space debris.

The panel's investigation was the largest ever, looking into over 20 years of evidence.

The extinction wiped out more than half of all species on the planet, including the dinosaurs, bird-like pterosaurs and large marine reptiles, clearing the way for mammals to become the dominant species on Earth.

Their review of the evidence shows that the extinction was caused by a massive asteroid or comet smashing into Earth at Chicxulub on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Comet or Asteroid Caused Extinction of the Dinosaurs

The comet or asteroids that struck earth was roughly 10-15 km wide, and the impact when it struck would have been a billion times more powerful than the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The huge crater remains to this day, and measures 180km in diameter and surrounded by a circular fault about 240km in diameter.

The result of the impact would have been instant fires, earthquakes and tsunamis, followed by a global winter due to debris launched into the sky.

Scientists settle on single-asteroid hit as culprit in dinosaurs' demise

A 'dream team' of researchers concludes that the massive Gulf of Mexico impact 65.5 million years ago -- not volcanoes or multiple impacts -- indeed caused the greatest extinction event of all

March 04, 2010|By Thomas H. Maugh II

It's official: The extinction of the dinosaurs and a host of other species 65.5 million years ago was caused by a massive asteroid that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, creating worldwide havoc, an international team of researchers said Thursday.

The 7.5-mile-wide asteroid was traveling at a speed about 10 times that of a rifle bullet when it hit, releasing a billion times more energy than the Hiroshima atom bomb. The impact blew dirt and rock around the world, set massive wildfires, knocked down forests worldwide, triggered massive tsunamis and earthquakes of magnitude 11 or larger and even caused parts of the continent to slip into the ocean.

Those events wiped out more than half of all species on Earth in what has been called the greatest extinction event of all time. The species lost included not only the dinosaurs, but also the bird-like pterosaurs, large marine reptiles and many smaller land and sea creatures, clearing the way for the emergence of mammals as the dominant life form on the planet.

All of this may sound familiar. In fact, the idea was proposed 30 years ago by Nobel laureate physicist Luis Alvarez and his son Walter after they found abnormally high concentrations of the element iridium in sediments from what was then known as the K-T boundary. This 65.5-million-year old layer of Earth separates fossils of the Cretaceous period from those of the Tertiary period.

Iridium is rare on Earth, but common in space, and the Alvarezes proposed that a giant asteroid had hit the Earth, producing the sudden decline in species diversity previously observed at the K-T boundary -- which is how the boundary got its name in the first place.

Then, in 1991, researchers discovered a 120-mile wide, 1.5-mile deep crater called Chicxulub in Mexico with the same age as the K-T boundary. Most considered it the smoking gun for the extinction.

In recent years, however, some scientists have speculated about alternative causes for the extinction, arguing that it could have resulted from multiple asteroid impacts or, more likely, massive volcanic eruptions at the Deccan Traps in India.

To settle the question, European researchers decided to assemble what Kirk R. Johnson of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science called "a K-T boundary dream team," a collection of 45 internationally renowned scientists in a broad spectrum of disciplines to analyze the possible causes of the extinctions. Funding came from the National Science Foundation in the United States and from similar groups in other countries.Their conclusions will be published Friday in the journal Science.

"The answer is quite simple," Johnson, a co-author and spokesman for the group, said in a telephone news conference. "The crater really is the culprit."

The aftereffects from the impact "shrouded the planet in darkness and caused a global winter, killing off many species that couldn't adapt to the hellish environment," co-author and Earth scientist Joanna Morgan of Imperial College London said in a statement.

Proponents of a multiple-impact theory have cited the fact that there appear to be several distinct layers of comet debris near the Chicxulub crater and evidence for many species surviving after the impact, only to go extinct later. But the research team concluded that those anomalies were created by jumbling of strata when debris flowed back into the crater after the impact.

There are now more than 350 sites around the globe where researchers have studied the K-T boundary -- now officially called the Cretaceous-Paleogene, or K-Pg, boundary. (K is the traditional abbreviation for the Cretaceous.) The sites that are distant from Chicxulub show evidence of only one impact.

Timing is the problem with the Deccan traps. A variety of data show that there were three major pulses of volcanic activity, one about 400,000 years before the K-Pg boundary, one about 200,000 years after and one sometime in the middle.

If the volcanism were the cause of the extinction, "we would expect to see events in the biological world associated with it, but we don't," Johnson said. In fact, the first pulse of volcanism was associated with a slight global warming and an increase in biological diversity.

Moreover, the amount of sulfur injected into the atmosphere by the volcanoes -- assumed to be the cause of their global effects -- was actually many factors of 10 smaller than that ejected in the impact.

And what does it matter? "There are a lot of asteroids out there now," Johnson said, and it is important to know what would happen if one were to strike the Earth.

http://www.cyol.net 2010-03-16

Haramein - the Rise of a new Prophet?
Saturday, 29. August 2009, 10:55:19

prophet, world, technology, people, Haramein, philosophy, science, archeology

From time to time interesting personalities rise to great popularity. One of them is Nassim Haramein from Switzerland. Born in 1962 he tells us that at age 9 he already had a significant interest in 'the secrets of this world'. Those are many, from history until the universe and our place therein. Where boys of his age still played with Lego blocks, he then started to develop a new idea about the hyperdimensionality of matter and energy. Einstein was an example for the later translation of this boy's dream into a new paradigm for sciences: the 'Haramein-Rauscher Metric' for an holofractographic universe. The University of Liège gave an award for his paper about this subject. Could it be the foundation for a fundamental change in our current understanding of physics and consciousness? What do we know more about Haramein, who is director of 'The Resonance Project' on Hawaii? Is he a new 'prophet' for a future world, or -as a do-it-yourself 'physicist'- a brilliant charlatan?

Amazing personalities require respect for what they sometimes suddenly achieve. Nassim Haramein is such a personality, attracting hundreds of visitors to his performances. They pay considerable amounts to see their 'guru'. But what's it all about? An exposé about the mathematics behind his 'holofractographic universe' can't be the reason. That within us might reside a 'black whole' likewise hardly, I assume. No, Haramein embeds his ideas in stories about archeology, physics, astronomy, sociology, philosophy. A generalist's approach of our already so very complex society. But his calm attitude, nice appearance and flux de bouche (eloquence) about controversial subjects make of him an attraction. What he tells with so much conviction however needs a critical assessment. I was for a long time impressed about what he claimed, until I woke up from that dream by some completely unsubstantiated claims that I could refute with incredible ease. I selected from his YouTube oeuvre 3 clips that paint an excellent picture of Nassim Haramein. Two of them are astonishing, the last however woke me up!

It took me considerable time to assess the mathematical claims from Haramein about his quantum universe and the organised chaos behind it. That by itself was no news for me. Moreover I discovered that a considerable amount of his wisdom also is to be found in the writings from the American theoretical physicist Brian Greene, professor at Columbia University. Greene's 2004 book 'The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality' also deals with space, time, and the nature of the universe. It serves his views on 'non-local particle entanglement', or in popular words: how everything is connected in this universe. The seemingly 'brilliance' of Haramein is, that he concluded that at the horizon of things energies and whirling forces of a black hole are at work. An idea that needs scientific attention and testing. But is his postulate already an hypothesis? Nevertheless I believe Haramein by accident landed very close to the truth indeed! How the geometrical symmetry of his model versus experimentally observed 'quantum convulsions' should be understood is for me an open question, as in fact is its formal originality.

About his pseudo-scientific escapades in the realm of old civilisations, archeology and biology, the influence from the Swiss Erich von Däniken appears omni-present. Haramein avoids too much attention for too wellknown South- and Middle American ancient histories as to divert attention to controversies about the Egyptian pyramids and those in China. Here he makes several excellent points regarding the way some archeologists and scholars deal with that history. The absurd and illogical often isn't enough for the generation that still is obsessed trying to prove the factual truth from biblical histories. For about 130 years that was the very startingpoint for what we know as archeology. Sir Laurence Gardner, author of a.o. "Bloodline of the Holy Grail" said: "By the 1880s, the governing establishments of Christendom were dreading the very word 'archaeologist'. And so, archaeological digs were brought under strict control, and their funding and undertakings had to be approved by newly designated authorities." No shadow of doubt that archeology still serves different purposes than sciences alone, what a.o. Haramein exposes. However when it comes to his 'giants' and parts of skulls showing deformations we already need to be vigilant. Craniosynostosis still is amongst us! Without mentioning this and showing undetermined pictures of deformed skulls to provide 'evidence' for his claims, Haramein clearly moves into the realms of speculations.

The wake up call came when viewing the last, Spanish undertitled clip about 'a huge comet' that passed the Sun in February 2003. That comet was called 'C/2002 V1 NEAT' and is widely documented on the Internet at specific comet-related websites. The claim that "one keeps it secret" is completely refutable and plain nonsense! That the comet was 'large' relates to the brightness of its image on very specific observational wavelengths of instruments in the SOHO satellite. This important solar observatory offers astronomers also options to discover otherwise unnoticed comets. Yes, the tail is near the Sun huge, but very thin. The object itself rather insignificant and certainly not of a magnitude to influence the orbit of planets. The German astronomer Dr. Rainer Kracht has an excellent website with far more Sun grazing comets that a.o. he discovered analysing satellite images.

It is disappointing to see a seemingly multi-talented person like Nassim Haramein, who attracts many people by popularising sciences, using selective material, speculations and dubious, if not false claims to convince people of our cosmic heritage. His public expects to hear a different new story, I suppose. The verifiable story from a visionary perhaps. They come to learn, not to be left in the dark, fooled or misled. It now raises eyebrows when suddenly far more substantial ideas are presented and rewarded. How original were these ideas? That everything is interconnected in this universe might give rise to new philosophies about ourselves, our society and nature. The practicable translation of these ideas into realities for people is what until now fails. Math formulas may look impressive and contemporary, the visualisations of them may look like art, the idea as such brilliant, but shouldn't need to be accompanied by showmanship at a seaside, media-presence with smalltalk and lectures that substitute verifiable facts for cleverly presented assumptions. That's not the way a new prophet would want to make his point...
