Metallica无疑是从上世纪80年代至今世界上最杰出和最有影响力的重金属乐队。乐队的一大贡献在于扩展了传统鞭笞金属的含义，从Metallica开始，复杂的编曲和大量华丽的吉他独奏也同样属于Thrash Metal。这种风格加上James Hetfield那极富冲击力的演唱，使Metallica长期处于重金属的统治地位。
Metallica的传奇故事开始于Lars Ulrich。Lars出生在丹麦哥本哈根的体育世家，出于对摇滚乐的浓厚兴趣，Lars开始练习打鼓。之后Lars Ulrich来到美国，在《The Recycler》杂志上刊登了一条广告，寻找志同道合的人准备组建一支乐队。Lars的号召不久就得到了响应，于是在1981年的洛杉矶，最早的Metallica班底形成。James Hetfield担任主唱和节奏吉他，Dave Mustaine担任主音吉他，Ron McGovney负责贝斯，而Lars Ulrich出任鼓手。这个阵容的Metallica出版了他们第一张demo唱片《No Life Til' Leather》。1982年年底，Clifford Lee Burton代替Ron McGovney加入Metallica。不久一直与乐队关系不佳的Dave Mustaine离开Metallica，另组了日后同样大获成功的Megadeth乐队。Metallica主音吉他的位置由Kirk Hammett担任。(这位美国著名吉他演奏大师Joe Satriani的得意门生，如今已成为诸多吉他手模仿的对象)乐队阵容从此相对稳定。 |
