Khonch Nokhoi have been Mongolia's livestock guardians for hundreds of years. They also guard monasteries, fodder reserves, and people's homes. The best picture I have of a true Khonch Nokhoi was taken by my friend Zeev. The dog pictured on this page is Bawgai, which means Bear in Mongolian. Bawgai was the beloved guardian of Amarbayasgalant monastery and is seen here with the lams on the morning of the Lunar New Year. He is not fully matured yet in these pictures. Sadly, Bawgai was poisoned by what the lams assume to have been a jealous person or a thief. As a gift to the monastery, Bawgai was a very fine example of Khonch Nokhoi, considered one of the best of his breed.
