“I graduated in the top 25% of my class with nearly perfect SAT scores, only to be cheated out of my “scholarship” halfway into my first semester of college. With no car & a min.-wage job at McDonalds, I was forced to drop out. Things went downhill - I lived out of my car for a while, but thankfully I was able to couch surf through most of it, thanks to great friends. My husband and I are now blessed with steady work - him at a hotel & me at a gas station - both overnight. Once our car is paid off hopefully we’ll be able to get health insurance, so when we get sick we can see a doctor, instead of going to the ER, since they’re the only ones who will see someone who can’t pay. We pawned pretty much anything pawnable to make ends meet, but now we share a house with 3 other friends, & with our 5 incomes combined, we’re staying afloat and doing okay. We’re the lucky ones because we’re managing to survive this, but I know personally that there are people less lucky than me, who aren’t surviving. It shouldn’t be this hard just to LIVE. And I know that the gap between the barely surviving & fully thriving is far too high.
We are the 99%.
P.S. I can’t even go protest in person because I can’t afford the trip.
And it’s 20 min. away.”
